What do we mean by a domain name ?
A Domain name is used to pinpoint one or more IP addresses. For example, the domain name domain-registration.com represents about a dozen IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs to identify specific websites. For example, in the URL http://domain.smartfish.co.in/register-domain-name.html, the domain name is smartfish.co.in. In short, a domain name represents an Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such as a personal computer used to access the Internet, a server which is hosting a web site, or the web site itself or any other service connected or communicated via the world wide web.
Every domain name has a suffix / extension that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of such domains. The first-level set of domain names are the top-level domains (TLDs), including the generic top-level domains (gTLDs), such as the prominent domains com, net and org, and the country code top-level domains (ccTLDs).
Example list of few top level domain names are listed below:
- gov – Government agencies
- edu – Educational institutions
- org – Organizations (nonprofit)
- mil – Military
- com – commercial business
- net – Network organizations
- in – India
- us – USA
Because the Internet is based on IP addresses, not domain names, every Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP addresses.
